Bar Code Asset Tracking Overview
Bar code technology is a low-price approach to file tracking, that is ideal for organizations with a minimal # of assets or that have budget constraints for implementing an asset management system.
SmartTraxx is a full featured asset management software solution. SmartTraxx enables physical assets to be enrolled as asset database records, and once the assets are enrolled, SmartTraxx provides full-featured asset management functionality.
If assets are not tagged with bar codes, then asset # and/or other asset data must be physically viewed and entered manually to a computing device or software screen. Bar codes enable association of a single bar code # with all data about an asset, and infrared scanning of the bar code rather than requiring error-prone and laborious input of asset # and data manually.
For customers utilizing bar coding, the SmartTraxx database should include a computerized registry of all assets. Each asset in the registry should correspond to a bar code asset label on a physical asset.
SmartTraxx includes sequentially numbered asset bar code tags and/or the ability to print bar code asset labels at the time of enrollment of the assets to the asset management database. New assets can be tagged with bar code labels. The asset labels are scanned with USB or portable bar code scanner to establish a database record for the asset.
For assets being placed into temporary storage, each storage location, bin or shelf can be tagged with bar code. As assets are placed into storage, the asset bar code and the location bar code can be scanned to update the database with the exact location of assets-in-storage.
When assets are pulled for transfer-of-custody, USB and/or bar code scanners can be utilized to scan assets and then location bar codes or ID card bar codes. As such, the SmartTraxx asset management database is updated with the real-time location of assets as they are transferred.
Non-serialized assets can be managed with mobile devices and fixed computers, by scanning an asset-type bar code and then incrementing and decrementing through manual or bar code input.
Portable bar code scanners enable rapid inventories of assets-in-storage and assets-in-circulation. Asset inventories include scanning a location bar code and then each asset at the location. The portable scanner updates the SmartTraxx asset management database with User, location, asset(s) scanned and time/date.
