Bar Coding for Non-Serialized Assets

Bar Coding for Non-Serialized Assets
Many assets within an organization, such as a laptop or an industrial machine, have a unique identification #, such as a serial #.
It is straightforward to apply a 1D or 2D bar code to any serialized asset, so that the asset can be transferred, inventoried and otherwise identified by the label and bar code that is on the asset. Serialized assets do not share a common ID # (such as a UPC code) and serialized assets are always a quantity = 1.
In addition to serialized assets, many organizations have non-serialized assets that may or may not need to be accounted-for as a component of a comprehensive asset management system. For example, items like the number of bolts or the number of containers of cleaning products that an organization may have at any point in time.
SmartTraxx software includes software screens that keep track of each non-serialized asset types. The software maintains a ‘current quantity’ field and enables a User to descrement the # of those items when removing items, or to increment the # of those items when adding items to inventory.
The portable scanners, phones and tablets supported by SmartTraxx enable cycle-counts and inventories of non-serialized objects, by scanning location bar code tags and by scanning object-type bar code tags. Once the object type is scanned, the portable scanner includes the ability to increment or decrement quantity.
